WHAT IS A WOONERF ?

Woonerf is a concept from Europe where the street is viewed as a public shared social space not strictly a channel for vehicles.

Woonerf is primarily a retrofit method that combines urban afforestation to create lush vegetated urban space, introduces permeable pavements to improve storm-water drainage, eliminates continuous curbs, integrates traffic calming measures to allow pedestrians, vehicles and bicycles to share the space.

STREETS IN HOLYOKE

Woonerfs were added to shape smaller social units within larger residential neighborhoods. The Holyoke proposal takes an aggregate of four continuous block units and introduces the woonerf concept onto the intersection of the street network. Within each four block unit, small scale outdoor public realm spaces were located from vacant or abandoned lots creating a shared outdoor experience for the community.

A typical street redesign into a woonerf see below.
